Tour Highlights
- Local experts lead in-depth Amis culture and traditional fishing experience
The ecological fishing method of the Fataan Tribe is called “Palakaw”, which means “the pond where fish perch” in their language. The clansmen build a three-layer structure which is made with hollow bamboo, pen-holder tree, tree trunk and Lagerstroemia subcostata branches(a plant), and is placed in a pond for fish to breed in it. Whenever we lift the branches, we can catch shrimps, and then big fish on the layer below.
Palakaw uses natural materials to build a three-storey “apartment” for the fish for their habitat and reproduction. Usually, a whole row of hollow large bamboo tubes is laid on the bottom layer for bottom-dwelling fish such as eels, eels, and earth lice. The middle layer is a bundle of branches of plants, allowing small fish and shrimp to go through. The top layer is a hollow bamboo tube, which is the residence of the stream fish. Finally, the water surface should be covered with betel leaves to block part of the sun, so that the fish and shrimp can live in peace. Each pond is connected to the main stream, Foden Creek, allowing fish and shrimp to inhabit freely. After a period placing the Palakaw in this river, the Amis fishermen can remove the branches to catch fish. The Amis fishing principle is to catch as much as they need to eat. Therefore, if the livings in river reproduce once, they can catch as much as they can at any time.
