Tour Highlights

More than half of the current population of Fenglin are Hakka people, who live scattered throughout Fenglin Township, and most of them work in agriculture. According to the field research, most of the Hakka villagers living in Fenglin Town were immigrants from Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taoyuan and other counties, and some are also from mainland China.

The Hakka people’s cultivation in Hualien can be traced back to the end of the Qing Dynasty, from the Central Mountain Range to the Posko in Yuli. At the beginning of the Japanese colonization, most of the flatland in western had been reclaimed, while the East Rift Valley was vast and wild. In order to settle their own immigrants, the Japanese government zoned out the land in east part of Taiwan, for the Japanese farmers. Before 1914, Lintian Japanese-style Immigrant Village was established. The Japanese believed that the Hakka people were more diligent, so they recruited Chinese from Hakka Village in Hsinchu and Zhongli, and they were offered five years of rent-free as their wages. Therefore, many Hakka villages came for a living, forming a strong Hakka culture then.

The beautiful and elegant Hakka ribbon pattern which is collected from the classic Hakka blue shirt with history of more than a century, is made into jacquard ribbon after analyzing the traditional techniques. These techniques are not just to remake the classic blue shirt, but also represents the precious culture.
