Little Tree Frog Ecological & Educational Farm
Fengshan Village, Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, is in the Rift Valley between the Central Mountains and the Coastal Mountains. In terms of culture and history, it is the most well-known “Fengtien Village”, an immigrant village during the Japanese occupation.
The administrative area nowadays is divided into Fengshan, Fengli, and Fengping villages. The original villages built by Japanese government, including temples, official halls, wooden Japanese-style houses, and markets have evolved over time, and are naturally mixed with Amis, Hakka, Hokkien and Chinese culture as different people lived in these places. The current livelihood and planning have built up the appearance of a settlement that is dominated by agriculture and supplemented by forestry.
In recent years, the common phenomenon of the aging population can be observed in Fengshan Village, as many other Taiwan’s rural areas do.
After graduated from National Chiayi Institute of Agriculture, Wei-Liang, Chen and his wife returned to their hometown to run businesses such as pig farm, dormitories, and Cybercafés to make a living. They saw a good opportunity for community revitalization that the “Rural Regeneration Project” might bring, so they worked on it together with the village chief and tribal leaders at the time. The first batch of 30 participants tried their best to recruit and persuade them to fill the training course. Great achievements such as the Rural Pilot Award, the first prize in Hualien District of the “Gold Medal Rural Competition”, and the National Environmental Education Excellence Award is this proof of their hard work in recent years.
