The farm owner Ling-ling,Lu and her husband have worked in the Northern Taiwan for nearly 30 years. Because of their interest in animals and the air quality in Hualien, they started a “sheep farm” business in Yuemei Bridge of Shoufeng Township as well as Fenglin Township, and it’s been 7 years till today. All the crops needed to be raised on their own for the healthy and clean food for sheep. So, they’ve adopted the organic natural farming method, and planted a lot of corn, soybeans, and other grains. However, due to the limited manpower, they concentrated on organic planting. Even though this is tough, the feedback from relatives and friends that “the taste is different from the market, not only delicious but also has a natural good taste” makes them feel that the hard work has a price. She believes that the land has its own memories, and it will grow whatever you put on it. She insisted on not using pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or even organic fertilizers. Although the harvest is not much, the high-quality products have always been recognized by consumers.

What’s most important of an ecological farm is to ensure the high quality of products. The land I cultivated under a two-field rotation, so that it’s better for the land and has the most organic matter in it. Besides, they grow weeds to diversify the microorganisms for more delicious crops.

The ecological farm insists that their farmland “use & add nothing” while plating the locally grown Hualien No. 1 soybeans, as well as the local black beans with yellow and green kernel. Because they do not fertilize at all, they leave half of the beans in the field after every harvest for it to grow naturally next season as fertilizer.
