Yue-Hung Studio: Taroko Weaving
Three generations of craftsmen in the workshop working hard to inherit the traditional weaving culture of the tribe.
Highlights
Yuzhi-Liao, a knitting craftsman: “Every stitches I sewed by hand, like my mother, she uses her hands to do all these, and she taught me back stitch, diagonal stitch and a lot more.”
The traditional cloth left by the grandmother is based on white ramie, the patterns are mainly rainbow bridge and diamond pattern, showing the characteristics of the Taroko people. This cloth has led three generations to achieve this weaving workshop.
Yuzhen-Liao, the younger sister: “The difficulty of weaving is picking weaving (which is 3D), picking out a pattern of the eyes of ancestors, which hurts our eyes so much, and very laborious, usually, flat weaving like ours is faster.”
Shuru-Zhan, the daughter: Ten years ago, she moved to Xiulin Township because of her child’s issues at school. She began to learn about tribal culture through her mother’s inheritance of his grandmother’s weaving skills. Then an idea came to her mind, inspiring her to transform traditional weaving patterns into modern clothing through creative methods. “There must be conflicts, but I will tell them that if we want people to know about our culture, we must pass this hurdle and makes changes.”
They follow the principles of lightness, thinness, plainness and cleanliness of Taroko fabrics. They use different patterns, styles and textures, which the patterns are mainly rainbow bridges and rhombus patterns. Over the past few years, they have transformed traditional weaving patterns into modern clothing through creative methods and developed the market. In addition to improving traditional weaving techniques, it has also been recognized by the ethnic group. I hope that everyone will know more about the Taroko weaving craftsmanship through these beautiful works.
